The mama hen hatched all 5 eggs. Sunday morning Jay helped me relocate the family to the "under chicken" area below the coop. Mama and chicks are adjusting just fine. I love hearing their little peeps and watching them tuck under Mama's wing.

peep, peep, crack
Things seem to be going to the birds 'round here lately. Last night when I went to tuck the chickens in there were peeping sounds underneath my broody hen. This morning there we two chicks (mama wasn't into the idea of my photographing her babies this morning) and three, as of yet, unhatched eggs.
I really wasn't wanting to start the chick process again as it seems we just got the last set of young chickens integrated into the flock. But this broody hen was determined to sit on something. Rather than use my own eggs I asked for eggs from a friend who has a breed (I don't remember the name) that she really loves. She started out with seven eggs but two mysteriously disappeared without a trace.
In the past I have turned the upstairs bathroom into chick nursery but it's a messy process so I've decided to let the mama keep the chicks "down under" and see how that goes.

peeps
These two little ones are seeing the world from between the support beams and the metal roof of our front porch. It's a scary view from their perch with a bird-loving dog living directly underneath them.

picnic weather
We have had a cool spring (which translated into Michigan weather is a warm spring). Perfect weather for enjoying picnics. I've been making my salad pretty by adding edible flowers. Yum!

video tour two: welcome to my garden
Back by popular demand.
Welcome to my garden tour number two.
In honor of my mother
and all the gardening she did when we were growing up.
Keep your eyes open for the lizard chasing white dog.
Please ignore the wind blown hair-in-the-face look. Focus on the pretty plants instead.
