Uglies by Scott Westerfeld.
I picked this sci fi up at the yard sale. It was a quick, fun read and like a lot of Science Fiction causes the reader to think about things outside of the paradigm.
Uglies takes place in the future, after our planet has been trashed. The reorganized, advanced, green civilization has people move through 5 phases of life: littlies, uglies, pretties, middles, and crumblies. All phases are overseen by the "specials". The main character, Tally, is an exceptionally gifted Ugly awaiting the arrival of her 16th birthday when she will undergo the surgery that will make her pretty. In the last weeks before the surgery she learns of a renegade rebel group of uglies who have run away and established their own Sherwood Forest-type community. She is blackmailed by the Specials into infiltrating "The Smoke" but once there she learns that the surgery that makes one pretty leaves lesions on the brain that affect reasoning.
Action packed and Thought provoking, it wasn't until the end of the book that I found there are three more books in this series before I can rest knowing the conclusion.
