Inhairtance
My dad used to get so frustrated when he came home from the store, unpacked the grocery bags, and discovered that once again the pop he had so diligently searched for had become "diet" pop during the ride home.
I thought about him yesterday after I rinsed the coloring out of my hair and reread the box. When I was at the store it said Dark Blonde but now that the color was attached to my head it read Terracotta Blonde AKA Super Woman Red.

chin up
When Jay went to New Mexico recently for work he called me after the Monday morning safety meeting and informed me that the respirator he was required to wear made it necessary to shave his beard. Not only had I never seen his naked chin but his children also had not memories of his clean shaven face. The occasion called for a special photo shoot compete with flair hair and props.

honey do day
This weekend we had one of my favorite days....a Honey Do Day where Jay and I are both home working around the house and yard. Jay worked on a watering system for the chickens using run off water from the garden swamp cooler and I pruned the Pomegranate tree (better late than not at all) I dug up unfriendly and unwanted cactus and hauled them to the neighbors where they were wanted while Jay pounded re-rod around the Pomegranate tree to hold bird netting. Jay harvested Saguaro fruit as I watered the garden. And when we were both so tired that we couldn't spell straight we went inside and processed the Saguaro fruit together. A very productive day.

water therapy
When Lily got her last splint off after her accident last fall the vet suggested we meet with the puppy physical therapist. I took our resident nurse along for the consultation to help me interpret the medicine talk. The vet pt said it could take up to a year for Lily to recover completely and recommended therapy to help her heal (think $$$ here). When we left the office, my nurse-friend suggested we look on Craigslist for a free spa so I could do water therapy with Lily at home. In less than 24 hours we had a 5 person spa loaded on the trailer and headed to Mountain View.
Lily has recovered nicely. She was very patient with me during our therapy sessions although I think she might be having hot tub nightmares.

weed week
Last week was Weed Week. Without my attention this spring the yard had become overgrown and hazardous. A trek across the property required covering ones ankles with protective gear.
Because of the high temps I tried to go out each day for a time in the morning and again in the evening...following the shadows around the house as much as possible.
I'm happy to report Weed Week was a success. Although not every weed was eliminated the dirt looks considerably better. To celebrate I found some pretty pearl lights to illuminate my swing.

toe count
120 toes -100 toes + 20 toes = 40 toes
We have company coming and going.
Our missionary friends, the Cobbett family, who have been living in their RV in our driveway since January first, headed north to Oregon yesterday evening.

At the same time we welcomed the arrival of two new guests, this pair of the smallish sort. Our friends are were in need of a place for their two children, a 3 year old girl and her 18 month old brother, to stay while they work through a family crisis. The children will stay for a few day until things are settled and they can go home.

This past week we had an unannounced guest for dinner when Jay picked up a young man who was walking alongside the highway and four last minute overnight/breakfast guests.
Yesterday I got a phone call from out of state friends, reminding us that they plan to stay with us two weeks in April while they are making doctor visits. Good thing they called as I hadn't remembered to write their visit on the calendar.
All this to say; my flexibility and hospitality skills have been stretched and grown since moving to Arizona.

of picnics and such

When I first moved to Arizona I tried to use the table on the patio more frequently but found that most evenings Jay gets home too close to dusk (or many times after) so that an evening picnic just doesn't work.
Sunday, however was a beautiful day in the neighborhood. Jay worked on cleaning out his work van while I worked in the garden and weeding. I quit early and got supper ready so that we could enjoy eating outside.
I had black beans I wanted to use and found a recipe with Black Beans, Quinoa, Cumin, and corn. I swapped the corn for peas although the corn would have been a better look and taste. I'm trying to avoid corn as much as possible because it is almost impossible to find corn that is not gmo. I think this is the first time I have cooked Quinoa. The dish turned out yummy, especially with a slice of cheese and sour cream.
We also had a fresh salad with lettuce, carrots and radish out of our garden.
Our little picnic was a nice way to end the weekend.

melon for breakfast
Last week I bought a box full of very ripe cantalope melon for $2.00. Each morning I cut a melon up for the chickens but I save a slice back for Lily.
When the weather is hot she often will not eat until evening when it is cooler but now that fall has arrived she has been quick to slurp up this yummy (at least to her) treat. So quick that I almost missed this Kodak moment when I stepped in the house to grab my camera.

cleaning contest

We were in the car with our Native American Ministry friends last spring making the long trek across town for Shabbat worship. I sat quietly as Lura talked with a mutual friend on the phone. During their conversation Lura mentioned a new house cleaning job that she just acquired. She asked if Maria's schedule was open to help with the initial cleaning as that is always the hardest. It was apparent from listening to one side of the conversation that Lura was going to have to do the colossal job herself.
"I could help you," I offered after she hung up.
"Really?"
From her surprised reply I deducted I don't look like the house cleaning type.
The house is 5,000 square feet, three and a half baths, five bedrooms, two teens, two elementary age children, two cats, two parents and toys, candy and food regularly strewn from one end to the other. That first day we cleaned both of us could hardly move at the end of the day and we pleaded with our husbands to take us to dinner so we didn't have to stand any longer. It was apparent after our combined 15 hour clean that the job was going to be too big for Lura to do by herself so here we are over six months later I'm still helping clean that house.
Although after three years of not having my own income I have been tickled to hold cash in my hand that I had earned myself, I do not enjoy cleaning other people's houses. I find it a rather gross job and am always sore the next day after all the bending and stooping.
In an effort to bring some interest into our routine I created a cleaning contest. There had been six Easter baskets on Easter morning stuffed with green plastic grass. By the time the "cleaning ladies" had arrived that grass had migrated to every nook and cranny in the house. After the third or fourth week of finding Easter grass tucked away in small places I approached Lura with the contest rules: Whoever found the last piece of grass would be declared the contest winner. A week or two later the prize surfaced when the owner of the house put a beautiful 3D stained glass butterfly in the trash. And the competition became more intense.
Each week we think we have found that last...and each week one or the other and sometimes both of us march in with a strand of grass held high and announce, "Look what I found."
I still dread cleaning day (I've decided Lura was right....I'm not the house cleaning-type) but the cleaning contest has brought a fun dimension to the undesirable task of cleaning someone else's dirt.

happy dance

After two and a half weeks of "live-in" company (and somewhere in the neighborhood of 60 pots of coffee) and five out of the past six days "on the road" I am happily home alone today. Laundry never felt so good.
We've been going a a hectic pace with a trip to Serria Vista for the ping pong tournament, Tucson to set up our camping trailer, four trips into the city to participate in the Native American pow wow at Phoenix First Assembly pastor's school, along with returning Tracy back to the city after his 25 day visit, all working around Jay's work schedule and taking care of animals at home.
Sigh....Home, Sweet-Sweet, Home.

crustless mushroom spinach quiche

I've been trying new quiche recipes since we have an abundance of eggs now that the littles are laying. Last night I tried another new recipe and was glad I had when we got a call from friends who were on this side of town and wanted to stop by.

list-love

I recently discovered that I now actually love Mondays-
a fresh start for a week ...
five days of possibilities....
making a plan, prioritizing, crossing off when things get done.
This morning was extra special-
Monday morning, a new week...
the beginning of a new month....
the start of the new year...
an an atypical Monday were my husband is home rather at work.
An occasion worthy of three lists-
one for today,
one for this month,
and one for the new year.
Oh, what bliss for a list lover like me.
